this book has one hundred four recipes written in standard style . Recipe chapter titles include : My Grandmother , My Teacher ; To the Market ; In the Garden ; From Pond and River ; Into the Lunar New Year ; The Lantern Festival : Dining with the Nuns ; Family Feasts and Folklore Festivals ; From Grandmother's House ; To My Kitchen . Before the recipes , there are five pages about the author's grandmother . Every chapter begins with several pages about the author's Grandmother as well . After the recipes , there is a sixteen page glossary called : Foods of My Chinese Kitchen : Ingredient Notes from A to Z explaining fifty-seven food items , each with its Chinese ideograph . The afterword is by Fred Ferretti , the author's husband . Included is a seven page , three column , cross-referenced Index . There is a single page about the author . The book is a memoir with many family photographs interspersed .
