Digital Research Collections

A Brief Historical Note

The Stony Brook University Libraries Digital Collections were established in 2003 with the formation of a small ad-hoc committee comprised of members of the library and campus community members from both academic and administrative departments.  The initial committee (team) was charged by the library administration to review the library’s former digitization efforts, and to investigate the feasibility of the development of a team-based approach to the creation of vibrant and engaging digital collections in support of the University’s mission. In support of this initiative, the initial committee conceived of, and implemented the Long Island Digital Books Pilot Project which later became the foundation for the repository’s Long Island Books and Documents Collection.

Today, a decade on and the Stony Brook University Libraries Digital Collections has grown in breadth and scope, encompassing thousands of items, and provides online access to Stony Brook University Libraries valuable and varied archival and general research materials, including books, periodicals, maps, photographs, video and audio recordings.  Materials contained within the individual collections represented within the repository may be accessed directly through this portal, or through the University Libraries on-line catalog STARS.  Additional information on the libraries many other holdings, services and research opportunities at the university may be found by visiting Stony Brook University.
